Answer
Windows Studio Effects utilizes AI on select Windows devices with compatible Neural Processing Units (NPUs) to apply special effects to the device camera (currently supports front-facing camera). AI effects supported by the NPU include:
- Background Blur:
A. Standard Blur - a simple gaussian blur effect
B. Portrait Blur - a subtle bokeh-style blur effect
- Eye Contact:
A. Standard - subtle correction for a device user looking down from the camera to the screen
B. Enhanced - more aggressive correction for a customer scanning their eyes all around the screen as they read content
- Auto Framing: Detects a person in the camera field of view and crops/zooms to keep them framed
Launching Windows Studio Effect
*Note: By default, MSI Notebooks bundled with AMD (Hawk Point, Strix Point, or newer) or Intel (Meteor Lake or newer) processor has Windows Studio Effect ready & included.
Method A. Enable via Windows Notification Center
Click on the Windows Notification Center located in the lower right corner, and Click on the Studio Effects tab to enable them.
Click on the arrow to access the features of Studio effects, modify different settings, and check through the preview image to apply the customized setup.
Method B. Enable via Settings Page
To access Studio effects from the Settings app, open the Settings app and click on the Bluetooth & devices tab on the left sidebar. Then, select the Cameras tab.
Enabling Windows Studio Effect
*Note: MSI Notebooks that have the pre-installed system have all required drivers installed, therefore, the Windows Studio Effect is default-ready & included without needing any further manual installation.
1. Update the Windows OS build to the latest 23H2, Windows Studio Effect start the support from Windows 11, version 22H2 or newer (Build 22623.885+).
For MSI laptops with Windows 11 OS, please ensure to update to the latest Windows build (newer than build 22623.885). You may also turn on the toggle of “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” in the Windows Update Settings
2. Visit the product specification page and make sure that the system has the processor that support NPU.
3. Installing NPU, Camera and Windows Studio Effect drivers on the system.
[Intel CPU]
a. Intel Camera Driver: Visit the product download page > Camera tab, download & Install the Intel Camera driver manually.
*Note. Only the laptop that supports 5 MP camera need to install this driver.
b. Intel NPU Driver: Visit the product download page > Chipset tab, download & Install the Intel NPU driver manually.
c. Windows Studio Effect driver: Visit the product download page > Camera tab, download & Install the Windows Studio Effects driver manually.
d. Make sure all drivers are properly installed, and the devices are recognized properly after the installation.
- [Intel Camera Driver]: Open Device Manager > Cameras > Intel(R) LNL AVStream Camera, double-click on Intel(R) LNL AVStream Camera, the driver version should match the installed version.
- [Intel NPU Driver]: Open Device Manager > Neural processors > double-click on Intel(R) AI Boost, the driver version should match the installed version.
- [Windows Studio Effects Driver]: Select the device Intel(R) AI Boost > click [View] and select Devices by connection, expand Intel(R) AI Boost, double-click on Windows Studio Effects Camera, the driver version should match the installed version.
[AMD CPU]
a. AMD MEP Enumerator Driver: Visit the product download page > Camera tab, download & Install the Intel Camera driver manually.
b. Windows Studio Effect Driver: Visit the product download page > Camera tab, download & Install the WindowsStudioEffectsBase and WindowsStudioEffectsCameraComponent driver manually.
c. Realtek Camera Driver: Visit the product download page > Camera tab, download & Install the Realtek Camera driver manually.
d. Make sure all drivers are properly installed, and the devices are recognized properly after the installation.
- [AMD MEP Enumerator Driver]: Open Device Manager > Neural Processor > double-click on NPU Compute Accelerator Devices > Details > Extended configuration Ids, the driver version should match the installed version.
- [Windows Studio Effects Driver]: Select the device NPU Compute Accelerator Devices > click [View] and select Devices by connection, expand NPU Compute Accelerator Devices, double-click on Windows Studio Effects Camera, the driver version should match the installed version.
- [Realtek Camera Driver]: Open Device Manager > Camera > double-click on FHD Camera Devices > Details > Extended configuration Ids, the driver version should match the installed version
4. Run Windows Studio Effect enable tool.
a. Download Windows Studio Effect enable tool: https://download.msi.com/uti_exe/nb/MEP-Enable.zip
b. Extract the file "MEP Enable.zip" and run the tool by doule-click on the executive file (RunMe.exe)
c. Reboot the system and the Windows Studio Effects menu can be accessed properly.
