Z890 or Z790? Choosing the Right Motherboard for Your Next Build
Motherboards
Intel® Core™ Ultra processors (Series 2) (also called Arrow Lake) feature a brand-new architecture that’s designed from the ground up for efficiency, granting you access to more features than ever before. They boast up to 24 cores, a 36MB Smart Cache, an on-chip NPU, and Intel Xe Graphics to accelerate creative workloads with QuickSync.
Of course, a new architecture often calls for a new chipset and socket – Z890 and the LGA1851 socket.
MSI’s range of Z890 motherboards is designed to leverage the efficiency, performance potential, and features of the latest Intel® Core™ Ultra processors. From top-tier enthusiast motherboards to more value-oriented options, gamers, overclockers, artists, and other professionals should be able to find exactly what they need in this lineup.
Z890 vs. Z790 Chipset: What’s the Difference?
Aside from the fact that the Z890 chipset is currently the only chipset that supports Intel® Core™ Ultra processors, it also boasts a few technical improvements over its predecessor, Z790.
One of the most noticeable changes in this new chipset is memory support.
The Z890 chipset supports ONLY DDR5 memory, while the Z790 chipset supported both DDR5 and DDR4 memory. That said, Z890 boasts support for cutting-edge CUDIMM DDR5 memory kits — allowing for much higher memory speeds and better stability at those speeds!
Added PCIe bandwidth is another discernible improvement to Z890 (compared to Z790).
Although both chipsets boast a total of 48 PCIe lanes, 8 out of the 48 lanes on Z790 are limited to PCIe 3.0 speeds. The Z890 chipset, on the other hand, drops the PCIe 3.0 lanes, and instead adds four PCIe 5.0 lanes and PCIe 4.0 lanes each.
So, what do all these numbers mean to you as the end user?
For one, it allows the platform to offer much better extensibility, like MSI’s Z890 products with up to 6 on-board M.2 slots. The additional bandwidth also allows for handy features like faster built-in LAN, faster Wi-Fi, full Thunderbolt 4 speeds, more USB ports, etc.
In addition to the 8 faster PCIe lanes on the Z890 platform, you’ll find some other improvements coming to MSI’s range of Z890 motherboards. From tool-free PC building features to a shiny-new BIOS interface, we have a few aces up our sleeve for this generation of motherboards EZ DIY Features: Make PC Building Easy Again
Building PCs is fun, but pulling out your screwdriver for the simplest task or wrestling with a part trying to get it out never feels great. With MSI’s Z890 lineup, we’re introducing EZ DIY for an effortless PC building experience.
These features were engineered to build, monitor, and set up your brand-new PC with as little as one hand, one finger, one glance, one click, and one step. For example, Z890 motherboards offer completely tool-less removal and installation of your NVMe M.2 SSD. This allows you to swap out your storage or install an additional drive with your bare hands. No screwdriver required!
